FULL ITINERARY:

DAY ONE.  ARRIVAL IN VICTORIA. On the southern coast of Vancouver Island, Victoria is surrounded on three sides by water and one side by towering mountains. The capital of British Columbia is known as “the garden city.” As you walk the streets you see flower baskets hanging from lampposts, manicured hedges, and impeccable private gardens. Some of the more famous sites include the Royal British Columbia Museum, Wax Museum, Bastion Square, Inner Harbor, and Crystal Garden. We suggest arriving a day early, having OutWest book you an additional night, and enjoying the city.

We will gather in the hotel in the evening for a drink where you can get to know your fellow travelers. Then we’ll head out for the first night’s dinner.
Accommodations: Laurel Point Inn

DAY TWO.  SCENIC FLIGHT TO TOFINO. In the morning, we will meet our float plane in the Victoria Harbor. The trip to Tofino is an exciting scenic flight along the west coast of Vancouver Island. From above you can see jagged cliffs, old growth forest, marine life, harbor villages, and the Pacific Ocean. We land in the Tofino harbor where we meet our kayak guides.

After receiving safety instructions and paddling techniques from the lead guide, we navigate our way to the Vargas Island Inn for our first night’s stay. In the evening, we enjoy a fresh a gourmet dinner paired with BC wine. Our day is finished with a wood-fired beach front sauna and evening swim before retiring to our cabins.

DAY THREE.  PADDLE TO CAMP. After a breakfast burritos and morning coffee, we look at the chart and check the weather with the guide. Before setting out, the guide will give further instructions about surf launch and landings. Along the rocky shores and reefs on the outer coast of Vargas Island, we’ll watch for seals, sea birds, and sea lions. We then head for North Vargas where we will set up camp for the night.

DAY FOUR.  MILLAR CHANNEL AND CLAYOQUOT SOUND. We set off for Whitesand Cove and look out for summer resident Grey whales. We stop for lunch and pause for some excellent photo opportunities of paddling on the open Pacific before making our way up Millar Channel to our campsite for the evening.

Summer resident Gray whales are known to feed on the sandy bottoms of nearby bays. They begin to arrive in the spring on their 11,000-mile migration from Mexico to Alaska and a few stay the summer. Sightings are not uncommon.

DAY FIVE.  INSIDE PASSAGE OF VARGAS ISLAND. While kayaking in the calmer inside passage, we watch for deer, wolf, and black bear, In the silence of the morning we glide past kelp forests along the calm inside passage of Flores Island. This night is back at the cabins where we have the comforts of a beachfront shower house and sauna.

DAY SIX.  BACK TO CIVILIZATION AND FAREWELL. After morning coffee and another satisfying breakfast, our water taxi transfers us back to civilization, the little fishing village of Tofino. After packing the gear and kayaks, we walk downtown for lunch and have an opportunity to experience Tofino. We take a final look at the Pacific Ocean with a short stop at Long Beach in Pacific Rim National Park. You can fly out of Tofino to Victoria or Vancouver. Farewell!
