DAY ONE. ARRIVAL
IN BILLINGS, MT. Your OutWest guides will pick you up in
Billings, Montana for the one-hour drive to the spectacular Beartooth
Mountains. At the campsite, your guides will review the basics of safe
and comfortable backpacking. If you have never backpacked before, fear
not; our supportive guides will be available for instruction and
assistance throughout the week. We’ll have some time in the afternoon
to wander the streets of the authentic western town of Red Lodge. You
can shop, pick up some last minute supplies, and kick back at a saloon
with a drink. Welcome to Montana! DAY TWO-FIVE. INTO THE WILDERNESS. To begin our adventure, we’ll hike up a wooded trail to a campsite on the shore of Kesyer Brown or September Morn Lake. The exact route will depend on weather, trail conditions, group fitness level, and guide preference. Below are some possibilities for side trips. A day trek to the 12,500-foot summit of Silver Run Peak. From the mountaintop, the Beartooths unfold in all their snow-crested glory. On the way back to camp, keep an eye out for mountain goats escorting their young across the rocky slopes. Quinnebaugh Meadows. This clearing is blanketed in lush mountain grasses. Nestled 3,000 feet below the surrounding peaks, Quinnebaugh is a perfect place to make camp. If we’re lucky, we’ll see some of the moose which often graze in the open fields. Sundance Pass. At the turn of the century, the infamous Sundance Kid robbed a bank in Red Lodge, Montana and fled into the Beartooths. To the delight of pursuing law enforcers, the Kid rode into a canyon that most believed to be a dead end. Alas, the posse arrived at the end of the canyon only to find no sign of the legendary criminal. It is assumed that the Kid rode his horse up the steep slope at the canyon’s head. In his honor, the route was dubbed, “Sundance Pass,” and has been known as such ever since. We hike up this pass and peer into the lake-strewn canyon on the other side. A day-hike to Lake Mary and Grass Mountain.
After hiking up tight switchbacks, we arrive at the tranquil Lake Mary.
Surrounded by mountains, Lake Mary is nestled between Sylvan Peak
(11,943 feet) and Grass Mountain (11,056 feet). If you are up for a
climb to Grass Mountain, you’ll scramble up a steep mountainside then
walk across the plateau to the summit. The spectacular view makes it all
worthwhile. DAY SIX. RETURN
TO CIVILIZATION After an easy stroll down a riverside
path, we’ll take a van back to town. In Red Lodge, we’ll check in at
the historic Pollard Hotel where you can relax in their hot tub and
sauna. In the evening we sit down for a ‘civilized’ dinner followed
by some western nightlife. DAY SEVEN. DEPARTURE Happy Trails! |
