Dominican Republic: Tropical Escape to the Caribbean

January 31-February 7, 2009

The Dominican Republic, one of the largest islands in the Caribbean, has more than what your typical small Caribbean island offers. As you’d expect, you’ll find pristine beaches, sailing, diving, and snorkeling. But you’ll also find vast tropical forests for hiking, deep canyons for exploring, trails for horseback riding, and roads for mountain biking. This destination offers it all…with the comfort of a beachfront resort.

OutWest Global Adventures designs its beach resort vacations to be as active or as laid back as you like. Included in the week is a snorkeling and sailing excursion, 1/2 day hiking trip, sunset horseback ride, all breakfasts, and most dinners. The resort is located in the center of Cabarete where you can walk out your door and experience the funky, laid-back atmosphere of this surfing village. Restaurants, bars, nightclubs, and shops are steps away. Do as much or as little as you want. It’s your vacation at your pace.

Highlights:
  • relaxing along the beach and watching the athletic boys and girls surf
  • mountain biking downhill from the mountains to the sea
  • horseback riding at sunset
  • dancing until dawn in one of Cabarete’s nightclubs
  • lying around and doing nothing at the resort

FULL ITINERARY:

ARRIVAL IN THE DOMINICAN REPUBLIC.  Flying to the DR is relatively easy with direct flights to Puerto Plata from the US. You will be met at the airport and driven the 20 minutes to the resort. Welcome to the tropics!
Accommodations: Valero Beach Resort

THE DOMINICAN REPUBLIC.  Located on the eastern 2/3 of Hispaniola, the Dominican Republic was the first permanent settlement of Europeans in the Americas. The culture is a rich mix of native, African, and European influences. The sound of the country is merengue. The taste of its food is spicy meat and fish dishes accompanied by fresh tropical fruit. The language is Spanish, with plenty of people who can speak English. The attitude is laid-back.

THE RESORT. The Velero Beach Resort is in the center of the town of Cabarete. The resort has a swimming pool, restaurant, and bar. Right out the door of the resort is Cabarete’s main street and beachfront where you’ll find international cuisine, beach bars, shopping, and nightclubs..

LIFE ON THE BEACH. The north coast of the DR has some of the best surfing, kiteboarding, and windsurfing in the world. Even if you’re not a surfer, you may enjoy watching the athletic guys and girls ride along the shores. A stroll along the beach is a trip around the world. North and South Americans, Europeans, and even Asians come to Cabarete for its surf, wind, and funky atmosphere. You’ll get in a laid-back, Caribbean beach groove. Hey, relax. You’re on vacation.

WALKING IN EL CHOCO NATIONAL PARK.  Included in the OutWest package is a 1/2 day trip to Choco National Park. This nature preserve has a variety of terrain to explore-jungle, lagoons, caves, forest, and open backcountry.

SAIL AND SNORKEL EXCURSION.  What is a trip to the Caribbean without some time on the water? We’ll sail along the North Coast of the Dominican Republic and stop at a reef for some snorkeling.

SUNSET HORSEBACK RIDE.  Take a romantic horseback ride along the beach. We’ll walk and trot through the surf and on seaside trails.
Accommodations: Valero Beach Resort

OPTIONS. OPTIONS. OPTIONS.  The north coast of the DR has many sites which you can explore on your own. Go sailing, snorkeling, scuba diving, hiking, canyoning, mountain biking, or whale watching. OutWest can help you make arrangements.
Accommodations: Valero Beach Resort

ONE CALL TO BOOK. THEN RELAX.  Just call OutWest and reserve a spot over the phone. Then let us take care of the details of your (DR)eam vacation. When you arrive at the airport we’ll have someone there to pick you up. Your room will be waiting. Most meals are included. You can join the group for organized activities- sailing, beach excursions, forest walks, horseback riding- or you can do your own thing. Stop by a booking desk along the main street and arrange scuba, snorkeling, mountain biking, or day cruises. Or you can just kick back by the pool and relax.

DO NOTHING.  Bring a beach towel and lie on the sand. Lounge by the pool and read a book. Make new friends around the resort bar. Get away from it all on our Tropical Beach Escape.
