September 22-24, 2006

Rome, a lifetime is not enough, goes the popular saying and it痴 true. Rome is a beautiful, chaotic, fascinating, and romantic city full of history, art, and architecture. Walking the streets of Rome is a journey from the Roman Empire, to the Renaissance, to modern Europe. The OutWest pre-tour in Rome offers walking tours to the major sites, a four-star hotel in the city center, all breakfasts and dinners, and a 1st class rail ticket to Tuscany, and the start of the bike tour.

Highlights:
  • throwing a coin in the Trevi Fountain
  • seeing the Coloseum
  • shopping for the stylish Italian shoes... or shirt... or jacket or...
  • dancing into the morning hours at a gay nightclub

FULL ITINERARY:

DAY ONE.  WELCOME TO ROME!

From Fiumicino International Airport, the easiest and most economical way into the city is the train from the airport to the central station. From there it is a short cab ride to the Hotel Eliseo.

Generally, flights from North America are overnight, departing the US the evening before and arriving in Rome in the morning. Depending on your arrival time, you should have some time to get settled in the hotel and do some walking around the city. The welcome reception and dinner is that evening.

Accommodations: Hotel Eliseo

DAY TWO.  WALKING TOUR OF ROME.

This is a day of sightseeing with a local tour guide. As we wander the street, you値l run across famous sites like the Spanish steps, Piazza Navona, the Pantheon, and St. Peter痴 Basilica. At the Trevi Fountain you値l want to throw a coin to insure you値l return to Rome. The Colosseum, dating back to ancient Roman 72 AD, may be a highlight. We値l enjoy a true Italian meal that evening with some optional gay nightlife.

Accommodations: Hotel Eliseo

DAY THREE.  CONTINUE TO TUSCANY.

The morning is free for sightseeing on your own. You may want to visit the Vatican or return to some of the sites from the previous day. In the early afternoon, we値l transfer to the Rome train station for our rail trip to Tuscany. When we arrive in Chiusi, we値l transfer to Montepulciano, where we値l join up with the rest of the group.
